Quotes that win more jobs

The estimate is where jobs are won and lost. How to quote so customers say yes — without racing to the bottom on price.

Two contractors quote the same job. One sends a one-line text with a number. The other sends a clear, itemized quote within the hour, with a friendly note and a clear next step. The second one wins - often at a higher price. Winning quotes isn't about being cheapest; it's about being clear, fast, and trustworthy. Here's how.

Speed wins before price does

The same rule that governs leads governs quotes: the first solid estimate often wins. A customer waiting on three quotes will lean toward whoever responded first and made it easiest to say yes. A quote that lands within hours - while you're fresh in their mind - beats a slightly cheaper one that arrives three days later.

Make it clear and itemized

A number with no breakdown invites doubt and haggling. An itemized quote builds trust and makes your price feel fair - the customer sees what they're paying for.

  • Line items: labor, materials, and any fees broken out.
  • Exactly what's included - and what's not - so there are no surprises.
  • A clear total and any payment terms.
  • A validity window ('good for 30 days') that gently encourages a decision.

Sell the value, not the price

If you only compete on price, you'll only win price shoppers - the worst customers. Instead, make the value obvious: your license and insurance, your warranty, your reviews, how fast you can start, the quality of materials. Give them reasons to pay you that have nothing to do with being cheapest.

Tip
Offer good/better/best options when it fits. A mid and premium tier next to your base price makes the base look reasonable - and a surprising number of customers pick up.

Always include the next step

Never end a quote with just a number and silence. Tell them exactly how to say yes and when you can start: 'Reply YES and I can have a crew there Thursday.' Remove every ounce of friction between their decision and the booked job.

I started sending itemized quotes the same day with a clear 'here's how we start' line. My close rate jumped and I stopped losing jobs to guys who quote cheaper.

The bottom line

Quote fast, make it clear and itemized, justify the value, and always include an easy next step. Speed and clarity beat a lower price more often than contractors think.

Common questions

A same-day written quote is the sweet spot - it feels considered but still fast. On-the-spot verbal numbers get forgotten and misremembered.

Don't just drop the price - restate the value, or offer a smaller scope or a good/better/best option. Cutting price without cutting scope trains customers to haggle.

You're attracting price shoppers. Lead with value, reviews, and responsiveness, and you'll win better customers who don't choose on price alone.
